This is a very important story, because it establishes that was born as the Son of God and NOT the son of a human.

He came to earth as the Son of God in order to live a sinless life. Because He never sinned, He can save humans from sin.

Who was Joseph?

Joseph was a Jew who was a righteous in the eyes of God. Being righteous means that he did not practice sins and was pleasing to God.

He was born into the family line of Judah and was a descendant of King David.

More importantly, Joseph was engaged to Mary. They were not yet married when she began to carry the Son of God in her womb.

What did Joseph do when he knew that Mary was pregnant?

Mary had to tell Joseph that she was carrying the Son of God, who would save the world from sins.

Joseph was astonished. It seemed as if Mary was telling him a tall tale. He was worried and wondered what to do.

He loved Mary very much and did not want the news of her pregnancy to become public. It would have become very, very difficult for her.

In those days, the people might have stoned her to death as the law of Moses commanded.

Joseph therefore decided to cancel the marriage arrangements in private. He did not want Mary to have any problems.

Mary told Joseph she was carrying the S on of God in her womb

An Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream

As Joseph wondered what to do, something miraculous took place. He fell asleep one night and saw an Angel of the Lord in a dream.

The Angel told Joseph to marry Mary and not to be afraid. The Angel confirmed that Mary was indeed carrying the Son of God in her womb.

He also told Joseph that the baby’s name was , for He will save the people from their sins.

The words spoken by the Angel of God therefore fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that:

“a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).”

An Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream

Joseph obeyed the Angel and married Mary

When Joseph woke up, he did just what the Angel said. He married Mary and they lived together as husband and wife.

When she gave birth to the child, he called His name , just as the Angel had said.

This is how Joseph became the earthly guardian of the Son of God.

(Matthew 1:18 – 23)

Mat 1:18

Mat 1:19
And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

Mat 1:20
But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Mat 1:21
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Mat 1:22
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

Mat 1:23
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Mat 1:24
When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,
