Introduction to the story

Today we are going to learn about the bible story. Samson was a superhero, but he had a weakness. He loved to befriend women from the Philistine nation that hated God.

These women did not love God and hated Samson. In today’s story, Samson met a woman called Delilah. She a beautiful, but ungodly woman. She was a Philistine and lived in a place called The Valley of Sorek.

Delilah also loved money and was a betrayer. Samson loved to visit Delilah. God did not permit men from to have friendships with women from the Philistine land. However, Samson did not obey God and this led to his downfall.

The Philistine rulers paid Delilah to capture Samson

The rulers of the Philistines heard that Sasmson visited Delilah often. They became very excited and planned to capture him. They came up with a plan to weaken him because they knew that he was very strong.

The rulers visited Delilah and promised to give her  eleven hundred pieces of silver if she could tempt Samson into revealing the secret of his strength:

if he tells you the secret of his great strength, and how we can win him, we will bind him and beat him – Judges 16: 5.

Eleven hundred pieces of silver was a lot of money and Delilah became very excited. She liked the idea of tricking Samson into telling his most precious secret.

She was going to be rich!

Delilah pleaded with Samson to tell her the secret of his great strength

When Samson visited Delilah the next time, she entertained him and made him feel relaxed. Meantime, the Philistines had strong men hiding in her house, waiting to capture Samson.

Delilah began to smile and plead softly:

Samson, tell me what makes you so strong. If someone wanted to tie you up, how could they do it?”

Samson was too clever to be trapped by Delilah and told her a lie:

“I will become weak if you tie me up with seven bowstrings.”

When the Philistine rulers heard Samson’s response, they found seven bowstrings. They brought these to Delilah. She tied Samson with them while he was asleep.

Delilah then shouted:

“Samson! The Philistines have come to capture you!”

The men hiding in the house rushed up to Samson. He leaped to his feet, and broke the bowstrings as if they were twigs.

The men became angry and muttered:

“This is not the secret of Samson’s strength,”

Delilah came upset and began to cry

Delilah became upset because she had lost eleven hundred pieces of silver. She began to whine:

“Samson, you are making me look like a fool by lying to me. Tell me the truth.

“Tell me how I can tie you up and over power you.”

Samson lied to her again, and replied,

“I will become weak if you tie me with new ropes that have never been used.”

Before the Philistines could capture him, Samson jumped to his feet and broke free from the ropes.

Samson told Delilah to weave seven locks of his hair into a loom

Once again, Delilah became very upset. She sternly said to Samson:

“Do not lie to me. You would tell me how to tie you up if you loved me.”

Samson lied one more time:

“I will become weak if you weave seven locks of my hair into a loom.”

That night, Delilah lulled Samson to sleep. Then she took seven locks of hair and wove them into her loom:

Samson, the Philistines are here to capture you!” she yelled.

Instead, Samson woke from his sleep, and slipped out of the house with the loom on his head.

Samson told Delilah to cut off his hair

Delilah was determined to get the eleven hundred pieces of silver. She pleaded every day with Samson, begging him to tell her the secret of his strength.

Samson eventually became tired of her pleas. He finally told her the truth:

“Because of my Nazarite vow, I have never cut my hair. If you cut my hair, then I will be weak like other men.”

Delilah knew that Samson was telling the truth. She sent a message to the Philistine rulers:

“Come back one more time. Samson has told me the
secret of his strength.”

Delilah sent the news to the Philistine rulers and they came with the money.

Delilah put Samson to sleep on her knees and called a man to cut off Samson’s hair. She yelled for the last time:

“Samson, the Philistines have come to capture you!”

Samson jumped out of his sleep like the other times. He said to himself:

” I will escape like the other time!”

However, Samson did not know that the of God had departed from him.

When the Philistines surrounded him. Samson was unable to escape because he had lost his superstrength that God had gi ven to him.
