How Mary anointed with Spikenard oil

This bible story in which Mary anointed with Spikenard oil took place six days before the Passover. Since the Lord was crucified the day before the Passover, the anointing therefore took place five days before His crucifixion.

was in Bethany and a guest at the house of a man called Simon the leper. His friends Martha, Mary, and Lazarus also lived in Bethany if you remember.

We have to assume that had healed Simon or NOBODY would have gone to his house for a meal!

Apostle says that Lazarus was also invited to the meal and that had already raised him from the dead. Martha served at the event as well.

Mary approached Jesus and anointed Him with Spikenard oil

As Jesus ate, Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus did something unusual. She approached Jesus with an alabaster box in her hand.

THe alabaster box contained one pound of the very expensive and fragrant oil called Spikenard.

Spikenard or nard oil came from the head or spike of a fragrant East Indian plant in a family called the Valerianna (, 2022).

Mary broke the alabaster box, and poured some of the oil on Jesus’ head!

Then to the amazement of the onlookers, she also used some to anoint Jesus’ feet. After doing that, Mary wiped the Lord’s feet with her hair.

As she anointed the Lord, the wonderful, fragrant odor of the Spikenard filled the entire house (and everyone inhaled and said ummmmm).

Judas Iscariot was annoyed that Mary had anointed Jesus

Jesus had a disciple called Judas Iscariot who hated the Lord. Judas used to carry reports about Jesus to the leaders who also hated Christ.

Judas began to fuss when he saw what Mary had done. He asked:

‘Why wasn’t this oil sold and the money given to the poor?’

Judas didn’t really care about the poor. He was in charge of Jesus’ money bag and used to steal from it. He just wanted more money for himself.

Jesus praised Mary and said that people would always remember her kindness to Him

Jesus knew that Judas was a thief. Instead of exposing him, the Lord said:

“Leave her alone. She has done this in preparation for my burial.”

“You will always have the poor with you, but you won’t always have me with you.”

Apostles Matthew and Mark added something else that Jesus said. He said that people all around the world would hear about Mary’s deed towards him where ever the gospel is preached.

“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii[fn] and given to the poor?”

He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.

Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it[fn] for the day of my burial.
