The miracle took place in a place called Cana, in Galilee. grew up in Nazareth, Galilee and He was known by the people. Maybe He was at the wedding of a relative or friend.

His mom was also at the wedding. Everyone was having a really great time at this festive ocassion.

Jewish weddings in Bible days

In Bible times, people were not married as they do today. A father would arrange the marriage with another Dad in the tribe, After the marriage negotiations took place, the father would call his daughter and ask for her opinion on the agreement.

When the agreement was concluded, a dowry or gift would be exchanged. If a father was giving his daughter in marriage, he would receive a dowry or gifts from the father of the groom.

On the other hand, a father had to give a dowry if he was seeking a wife for his son (My Jewish Learning, 2022).

The bride price or mohar

The mohar was the price paid by the father of the groom to the father of the bride. It would be paid in cash or other gifts.

For example, Abraham’s servant gave jewels of silver, jewels of gold, clothing and other precious things to Rebecca and her family when he asked for her to marry Isaac (My Jewish Learning, 2022).

The Africans still practice the mohar today. They call it the bride price

The betrothal and wedding ceremonies

In ’ times, there were two parts to a wedding. The first was the betrothal, then the wedding. The woman was legally married at the betrothal, but she lived in her father’s house until the wedding ceremony.

She could not belong to another man unless she was divorced from her betrothed.

The wedding then took place. It was a colorful procession in which the the engaged woman was taken to the house of the groom (My Jewish Learning, 2022).

One day Jesus, His mother and His disciples were invited to a wedding in a place called Cana in Galilee. It was very exciting watching the bride and groom marry. Everyone was very happy for them both. – Slide 1

The wine finished very quickly at the wedding that attended

So Jesus and His disciples were at the actual wedding ceremony of the couple. Everyone was having a great time.

Jesus’ mother noticed that the servants who looked after the guests were very upset. She heard them say that there was
no more wine for everyone to drink.

The husband and wife were very worried. went to her son Jesus and told him about the problem. She did so because He always worked miracles in their home:

Jesus looked at His mother and responded,

‘Mom, It’s not time to start my miracles yet.’

His mother smiled and told the servants to do whatever Jesus said. She knew Jesus would help because He loved people.

Jesus told the servants to fill the water jars with water

Jesus looked around. He saw six big water jars in the house. They were made from stone. He called the servants and said:

Fill the water jars with water, then ask the head man who looks
after all the guests to taste it.’

Amazed at the request, the servants did as Jesus commanded.

Jesus saw that there were six big water jars in the house. ‘Fill them with water then take some of the water to the head man who looks after all the guests and let him taste it.’So the servants did as Jesus commanded. – Slide 7

The head man began to drink the water and his eyes popped open! He was tasting the best wine he had ever enjoyed!

He told the bride and groom that he really liked their wine and that it tasted the very best of all.

Everyone gave a cheer and the celebrations continued. This miracle reminds us to trust Jesus to make something out of the things we have.

This was the first public miracle that Jesus performed!

As the head man began to drink the water it became wine and it was delicious! The man told the bride and groom that he really liked their wine and it tasted the very best of all. They were so happy! Jesus had begun His miracles! – Slide 8

Jesus turned water into wine bible verses

Jhn 2:1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

Jhn 2:2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

Jhn 2:3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”

Jhn 2:4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”

Jhn 2:5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Jhn 2:6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.[fn]

Jhn 2:7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.

Jhn 2:8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.

Jhn 2:9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom

Jhn 2:10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”

Jhn 2:11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

Then it was time to sit down and eat delicious food and drink. Some of the grown ups drank wine. The children ran and played and laughed all day. – Slide 4
