Nain was a city in Galilee, where Jesus was from. It was located on the northern slope of a hill called “The Little Hermon”
Nain still exists today
Today, Nain is called Nein. Just as in Jesus’ time on earth, very few people live in modern-day Nain.
Jesus visited Nain and met the mother and mourners
Apostle Luke tells us that Jesus traveled to Nain one day on a ministry assignment. He was accompanied by His disciples and a very large crowd of excited people.
As Jesus approached the city gates, He saw the funeral procession. The mother was accompanied by a large crowd of people. She was sad and weeping.
Feeling compassion for the sad mother, Jesus approached her and said, “don’t cry.”
Jesus told the young man to arise
Jesus went up to the coffin and touched it. When He did so, the people carrying it sopped walking.
Speaking firmly, Jesus said, “young man, I say to you, arise.”
The dead man got up and began to speak. Jesus then handed him over to his mother with a smile.
Everyone in the crowd went crazy. All of the people who were crying became jubilant. They began to praise God with all of the energy they had.
They said things like:
“A great prophet has arisen among us!” and
“God has visited his people!”
When they saw the miracle, people in the crowd told it everywhere they went in the region.
Jesus raised a dead man to life bible verses
Soon afterward he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him.
As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her.
And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.
Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!”
And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.
What can we learn from this miracle when Jesus raised a dead man to life?
We learn that:
Nothing is impossible for God to do.
Jesus turns sorrow into joy.
