THREE reasons why children and adults should give thanks to God

Giving thanks has such good benefits that God told us to practice it. In fact, scientific researchers have found this to be true.

Here is what the Bible says about reasons for giving thanks:

  1. We should give thanks to God because He takes care of us and protects us from our enemies – 2 Samuel 22: 47 – 51.
  2. We must thank Him for the great things He has done and tell others – 1 Chronicles 16: 8.
  3. We thank God for His goodness and kindness – 1 Chronicles 16: 34.

The Science of Gratitude: research on gratitude

Scientists are beginning to discover that there are positive health benefits of giving thanks. They call this field the SCIENCE OF GRATITUDE. It was the brainchild of a researcher called Glenn Foxx.

Here are scientific findings related to giving thanks (Forbes, 2021):

Giving thanks causes the human brain to release two called serotonin and dopamine. These are “feel good” that have positive effects on mood, willpower, and motivation.

Regularly giving thanks strengthens pathways in the brain responsible for mood, willpower, and motivation.

As people continue to regularly give thanks, the brain is trained to focus on positive things rather than negative things. Focusing on positive things leads to positive mental and physical outcomes.

Glenn Foxx, Science of Gratitude founder, discovered the following benefits of giving thanks in his research:

Giving thanks is linked to social bonding, reward, and stress relief. Other studies revealed that giving thanks promotes social connections with others because of the release a chemical called oxytocin.

Other health benefits of giving thanks include:

  • general well-being.
  • better sleep.
  • becoming more generous.
  • feeling less depressed (Lindberg, 2019).

Practicing gratitude can have profound health benefits, USC experts say.
